What's typical at this age

Most babies are around 48–52 cm long at birth. Newborn length is measured lying down (recumbent length), and it's normal for early measurements to vary by a centimetre or so between visits. In the first month, the median girl grows about 4.5 cm.

A percentile compares your girl to other girls the same age — the 50th is simply the middle. Being above or below it is usually completely normal; a baby who has always tracked the 15th or 85th percentile is typically growing exactly as they should. What pediatricians watch for is a sudden change in the pattern, not the number itself.
