What's typical at this age

Five-year-olds typically grow around 6 cm a year. Most children now track a height percentile they'll roughly hold until puberty — consistency of the curve, not the number, is what pediatricians look at.

A percentile compares your boy to other boys the same age — the 50th is simply the middle. Being above or below it is usually completely normal; a child who has always tracked the 15th or 85th percentile is typically growing exactly as they should.
